2020 Call for Board Nominations

Fellow River Grove Community Members,

Earlier this year the Board of Directors exercised the “Force Majeure” clause in River Grove bylaws. This allowed for a delay of board elections until it was reasonably able to meet balloting and voting requirements for our school community, which are required to take place while school is in session. Under normal circumstances River Grove would have held the election in May and seated new members in July. At that time, however, Covid-19 was rapidly evolving and subsequently placed unexpected pressures on school staff and families to manage significant learning program changes mid-term. As such, the school board did not feel that moving forward with elections at that time would be fair to River Grove’s administrative team, which manages much of the election process, or to River Grove community members looking to participate in it.

With our administration, staff, and board continually working to bring as much normalcy as possible to the upcoming school year, we are excited to again take the important step in River Grove’s continued growth and development by moving forward with our elections process.

The responsibility of the Board of Directors is to direct the affairs of the school and exercise its powers subject to state law, the articles of incorporation, and the bylaws of the organization.

The Board of Directors shall consist of seven unrelated Directors. The Board shall have at least one licensed teacher, one community member who resides in Minnesota (a person neither a licensed teacher employed by the School nor a parent of a student currently attending the School), and one parent or legal guardian of a student enrolled at the School.

The board is currently seeking nominations to fill two (2) board positions: one Community Member and one open position.

Eligible nominees for the Community Member board position must be neither a licensed teacher employed by the School nor a parent of a student currently attending the School.

Eligible nominees for the open position can be any of the following:

1) a licensed teacher who is employed as a teacher at River Grove; or 2) a parent or legal guardian of a student enrolled in the school who is not an employee of River Grove; or 3) a person who does not have a child enrolled in the school.

River Grove employees are not eligible to serve on the board other than teachers under clause (1). Contractors providing facilities, goods, or services to River Grove shall not serve on the board of directors.

Those interested in serving are encouraged to meet with the Board Chair and/or other Board Members to better understand the position and expectations. Contact information can be found here: https://marineareaschool.org/macs-board/

Those looking to run are asked to send a brief statement of qualifications to share with eligible voters. Please submit nominations to info@marineareaschool.org by Tuesday, September 15, 2020. Within the statement of qualifications please include your reason for seeking a board position, any specific skills you feel will benefit the board, and general information about you. Specific skills can include, but are not limited to, experience with preK-12th grade education, legal compliance, financial management and accounting, fundraising and development, and community engagement and parent involvement. Please try to limit statements to 300 words.

Elections will be held at the River Grove Board Meeting on Tuesday, September 29, 2020. Voters eligible to elect the members of the school’s board of directors are staff members employed at River Grove; members of the board of directors; and all parents or legal guardians of children enrolled in the school.

Three-year terms start dates will be effective July 1, 2020 to coincide with our traditional election schedule.

Articles of incorporation and bylaws can be found on the River Grove website

Board members are expected to read and be familiar with the MN State Statute regarding charter schools at https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/cite/124E.
