2021 Call for Board Nominations

River Grove: A Marine Area Community School is opening nominations for board members. The responsibility of the Board of Directors is to direct the affairs of the school and exercise its powers subject to state law, the articles of incorporation, and the bylaws of the organization. The two board seats currently occupied by Board Chair Dan Miller and Kindergarten Teacher Jessica Hansen are up for re/election this May. Eligible nominees for the positions can be any of the following:

  • a licensed teacher who is employed as a teacher at River Grove; or
  • a parent or legal guardian of a student enrolled in the school who is not an employee of River
    Grove; or
  • an interested community member who resides in Minnesota, is not employed by River Grove, and
does not have a child enrolled in the school.

River Grove’s Board of Directors is a non-majority board, meaning any of the three eligible nominee categories cannot hold a majority (four) of seats on the board. As such, depending on which category eligible nominees fall into, there may be a scenario where second and/or third top vote getters may not be seated. (For example, we currently have three teachers on the board with one of their seats up for re/election. With two seats up for re/election, both seats could not be won by candidates falling into the licensed teacher roles.) If you have clarification questions for this breakdown please reach out to info@marineareaschool.org.

  • River Grove employees are not eligible to serve on the board other than teachers under clause (1).
  • Contractors providing facilities, goods, or services to River Grove shall not serve on the Board of Directors.

Those interested in serving are encouraged to meet with Board Members not on the ballot to better understand the position and expectations. Contact information can be found here: https://marineareaschool.org/macs-board/

Those interested in serving are also asked to send a brief statement of qualifications to share with eligible voters. Within the statement of qualifications please include your reason(s) for seeking a board position, any specific skills you feel will benefit the board, and general information about you. Specific skills can include, but are not limited to, pre K-12th grade education, legal compliance, financial management and accounting, fundraising and development, and community engagement and parent involvement. Please try to limit statements to 300 words (we will not be counting).

Please submit nominations to info@marineareaschool.org by Tuesday, May 4, 2021.

Elections will be held at the River Grove Annual Meeting on Thursday, May 20, 2021. Voters eligible to elect the members of the school’s board of directors are staff members employed at River Grove; members of the board of directors; and all parents or legal guardians of children enrolled in the school. Three-year terms will begin on July 1, 2021.
