Chorus by the River Grove 5th Grade • Directed by Calyssa Hall, Artistic Director, The Zephyr Theatre

River Grove: A Marine Area Community School is proud to present The Music Man on May 15, 16, and 17 at 7:00pm at the Marine Town Hall on Judd Street. The sixth-grade play has been a Marine tradition for 47 years and continues with production leadership from The Zephyr Theatre, thanks to a generous anonymous donation to ensure the tradition continues.

Since 1972, with the first play Oliver, every fifth- and sixth-grade class has presented a musical to the community. The Zephyr team, led by Artistic Director Calyssa Hall, brings professional production talent for the students to engage in theater and musical arts.  And, the play provides the gift of musical theater to the community.

Order tickets from the River Grove office (651-409-3122; info@marineareaschool.org) or the Marine General Store (651-433-2445). Or, if tickets remain, at the box office the night of the performances for $10/adult and $6/child.

Every sixth grader, since the beginning of the play productions, has had a part on stage conquering nerves and growing in confidence. One of last year’s Aladdin performers declared simply, “It made me feel successful!” Many alumni attend the production every year wearing name tags with the production and year that they graced the Town Hall stage in front of peers, family, and community members. Some familiar past productions have included the Sound of Music, Annie, Tom Sawyer, Fiddler on the Roof, Into the Woods, The Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan, and many more.

The Music Man, Jr. script is adapted for students and fits the aesthetic of the Marine Town Hall perfectly. It will be fun for the whole community!” said Calyssa Hall.

The fifth graders have traditionally provided the choral back-up and look forward to their opportunity as sixth graders to be on stage. The experience provides a theatrical graduation ceremony from sixth grade, and the kids provide a gift to the community in appreciation of the educational experience they’ve had in Marine on St. Croix.

The school hopes to continue the tradition of the sixth-grade play every year to deepen arts experiences through musical theater and continue strong community connections with Marine. “The Zephyr Theatre is honored to partner with River Grove in the continuation of this magical Marine tradition. The sixth-grade play will be a lifelong memory for these kids and is such an important milestone in developing confidence and identity at this point in their lives,” commented Calyssa Hall.
